Preparing People For Success

Tuned-In for Success
Collinsville High School Graduate, Karl Klein, Turned a Passion Into a Career Path

Take a high school student with a music passion…provide an outlet through a quality educational environment and the results could lead to a career.

Meet Karl Klein. The Collinsville High School graduate (May 2007) turned his passion for music into a career training goal.

The Broadcasting & Sound Engineering program at Tulsa Tech was Karl’s outlet in 2006. Now in his second year there, and as class president, he is expanding his skill set through their Television Production program.

Klein remembers how he tuned-in to Tulsa Tech. “A representative visited Collinsville High School when I was in 10th grade and when Tech’s Broadcasting curriculum began I submitted an application and was approved.”

With a high-frequency interest in music that approval was just what he needed. “My first year at Tulsa Tech was a crash-course in the field of broadcasting,” Klein recalls.

“I learned the basics and soaked up all I could.” He credits their outstanding instructors like Tim Bell (Broadcasting & Sound Engineering program) and current instructor, Ms. Teresa Piper (Television Production program) with helping him further connect to the world of media.

“My instructors have essential experience in their training area,” Klein notes. “Questions get answered with direct application to necessary skills.”

Additionally, Klein highlights Tulsa Tech’s available, industry-standard equipment. “I gained a working knowledge of the benchmark software used in broadcast media; it’s a level of technical know-how that can potentially open career doors.”

Tulsa Tech has a springboard quality that’s particularly beneficial to high school students like Klein. His experience recently led to an internship (Fall 2007) with local radio station, 106.9 K-Hits.

Early on, Klein realized how the station’s fast-paced environment expands his real-world experience. “I’m given opportunity to work throughout every facet of the station, wherever I’m needed.”

He sees the role preparing him for future job opportunities. With hard work and the invaluable hands-on training, he believes numerous doors will be opened.

Klein is building on Tulsa Tech’s foundation laid while completing his high school education. He envisions increasing his Broadcasting and Journalism degree work and is complimenting his previous and current Tulsa Tech training with related course work at Tulsa Community College (TCC).

“If you have a natural talent or even an interest in a certain area of skill, Tulsa Tech probably has a course available,” Klein encourages. “High school students can receive exceptional training there in a fun environment away from their usual campus routine – and it’s free of charge.

The instructors are approachable and interested in you excelling in your field of interest. Tulsa Tech is a significant starting point where you learn so much in a single year from people who are professionals and deserving of a pat on the back.”

Karl Klein is tuned-in to success. Tulsa Tech is the place for high school students, like him, to find their passion or turn theirs into a career path.
